GM May Shift Focus From LFP To LMR Batteries For Future EVs

The automaker is prioritizing a battery technology they believe can offer lower costs and higher energy density for future electric vehicles.

General Motors may change from plans to use lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in future electric vehicles as it increases its focus on lithium manganese-rich (LMR) battery technology.

Reuters reported that GM Vice President of Battery, Propulsion and Sustainability Kurt Kelty said the company is prioritising LMR batteries, which it believes can attain costs similar to LFP batteries while delivering larger energy density.

GM had earlier announced plans to manufacture LFP batteries for future EV models at its Tennessee facility from late 2027. However, Kelty said there is a possibility that LFP batteries may not become part of the company’s long-term EV strategy.

According to Reuters, the Tennessee plant is expected to begin producing LFP cells soon, but the batteries will initially be used in energy storage systems rather than electric vehicles.

GM has been developing LMR battery technology for more than a decade and has previously said the chemistry could help reduce battery costs while maintaining vehicle range. The company sees LMR batteries as a potential alternative to both traditional nickel-rich batteries and lower-cost LFP cells.

The move would set GM apart from several automakers, including Tesla, Ford and Rivian, which have adopted LFP batteries in some EV models. While LFP batteries are known for their lower cost and durability, they generally offer lower energy density than competing battery chemistries.
