Observing World IP Day, the Ministry of Science and Technology organised a dynamic workshop in Bengaluru, uniting experts to advance tech commercialisation and scale academic IP into market-ready solutions.
A national workshop titled “Driving Innovation with IP: Strategic Approaches to Commercialisation” was held at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, on the occasion of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day 2025, which was on 26 April.
Organised by the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, government of India, the event aimed to foster dialogue on intellectual property management and innovation-led growth.
The workshop gathered over 250 in-person and 500 virtual participants, including representatives from academia, tech startups, public sector undertakings, and government bodies. Key collaborators included IIIT Bangalore, Central Silk Board, CMTI, C-DOT, IPTeL, and the BeST Cluster.
It featured two major panel discussions with experts from Biocon Academy, CSIR-CFTRI, IIIT Innovation Centre, and others, focusing on effective licensing, commercialisation challenges, and policy-level changes required for a thriving innovation ecosystem.
Commodore Amit Rastogi (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of NRDC, delivered the keynote address, highlighting NRDC’s role in advancing academic innovations through programmes like NETRA and blended financing mechanisms.
He announced upcoming initiatives, including a Technology Exchange Portal, IP fairs, and the establishment of a National Tech Translation Organisation (NTTO), aligned with the national development vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
Professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISc, addressed the significance of institutional IP frameworks and called for greater encouragement of patent culture in Indian research institutions.
Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between NRDC and IIIT Bangalore to promote tech transfer.
The event concluded with a collective call for stronger academia-industry collaboration and scalable IP commercialisation strategies to enhance India’s innovation capabilities and global competitiveness.
