Powering a digital leap, India surpasses the 1-billion broadband mark, up from 131 million users over the past decade, strengthening access, inclusion, and innovation nationwide.
India has crossed a digital milestone, with the country’s broadband subscriber base exceeding 1 billion users in November 2025. According to official data, India’s broadband user base has increased from 131.49 million to an exact figure of 1.0037 billion, representing a more than six-fold surge in connectivity.
The government highlighted that this marks a dramatic expansion in internet access over the past decade and reflects the rapid growth of digital infrastructure across both cities and rural regions.
The rise has resulted from a combination of extensive network roll-outs, competitive pricing by service providers, and sustained government efforts to narrow the digital divide. Increasing investment in fibre networks, wider mobile broadband coverage, and improved affordability have played a key role in bringing millions online.
Officials say the trend shows the strengthening of India’s digital foundation and its growing role in enabling communication, education, healthcare, financial services, and e-governance.
The swelling subscriber base places India among the largest broadband markets globally. Policymakers view this as a crucial boost for inclusive socio-economic growth, as internet access supports entrepreneurship, job creation, innovation, and citizen empowerment.
Digital services such as online learning, telemedicine, remote work platforms, digital banking, and e-commerce have expanded as well, driven by this connectivity push.
The milestone also aligns closely with the objectives of the Digital India initiative, as per the government.
