India’s Semiconductor Revolution to Unleash 80,000 Jobs and Skill Training Opportunities

The nation aims to train 85,000 students in semiconductor chip design over the next five years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that the Union Cabinet has recently approved the establishment of three major semiconductor units in India, as part of the country’s push to develop a comprehensive display manufacturing ecosystem. This initiative is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, with 20,000 direct jobs and an additional 60,000 indirect jobs.

The semiconductor units will include Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities. These will be strategically located at Jagoraod, Assam, Sanand and Dholera in Gujarat. This decision is in line with India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its semiconductor and electronics manufacturing capabilities, thereby reducing dependency on imports, enhancing domestic production, and supporting the country’s vision of becoming a global semiconductor hub.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while speaking at the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), highlighted a significant development for the region’s industrial landscape. He announced that one of the three proposed semiconductor units, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Private Ltd, would be established in Jagiroad, Assam. This unit represents an investment of approximately Rs 27,000 crore, making it the largest investment in the region to date.

Minister Shah further emphasized the transformative potential of this project for the Northeast, not only in terms of economic growth but also in creating job opportunities. Recognizing the need for a skilled workforce to support this cutting-edge industry, Shah revealed that the Union Ministry of Education is collaborating with universities in the Northeast to develop specialized courses. These programs aim to equip local youth with the relevant education and knowledge required for careers in the semiconductor and technology sectors.

India aims to train 85,000 students in semiconductor chip design over the next five years, creating a skilled workforce to meet the growing demands of the industry. This initiative aligns with projections from a TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship report, which estimates the need for 3 lakh skilled professionals in the semiconductor sector by 2027.

Assam is making significant progress in this direction, with plans to engage 150 suppliers and procure 61 types of raw materials to support the upcoming semiconductor plant in Jagiroad. These efforts highlight the state’s pivotal role in bolstering India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
