Promising substantial funding and incubation assistance, the government is inviting startups from various sectors like AI, IoT, and fintech to nurture innovations in rooftop solar tech and DRE.
The central Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced a national-level innovation challenge for startups to boost advancements in rooftop solar (RTS) and distributed renewable energy (DRE) technologies. A total prize fund of ₹23 million has been allocated for this.
Launched during the National Conference on Skill Development for the Renewable Energy Workforce at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi, this, under the name of ‘Innovative Projects Start-Up Challenge’, aims to identify solutions for India’s growing clean energy needs.
According to a recent release by the Press India Bureau, the initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and Startup India under DPIIT.
It focuses on fostering innovation in four key categories: affordability, resilience, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. Startups working in sectors such as green technology, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, fintech, construction, and waste management will be able to take part.
The challenge encourages ideas that reduce costs, improve energy access, enhance grid stability, and enable environmentally sustainable practices.
Furthermore, proposals are sought to make rooftop solar accessible for low- and middle-income households, improve solar infrastructure’s climate resilience, expand energy access to remote communities, and promote technologies like solar panel recycling and hybrid systems.
The top winner will receive ₹10 million, with ₹5 million and ₹3 million going to the second and third places, respectively. Ten additional teams will each receive ₹500,000 as consolation prizes.
Winners will also benefit from incubation, pilot project support, and expert mentorship arranged by MNRE and NISE.
As per MNRE, the deadline for applications is 20 August 2025, and results will be declared on 10 September 2025. Submissions must be made through the official Startup India website.
