Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan emerge as top beneficiaries under the scheme with the highest household coverage.
Over 2.6 million households have benefited under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as of December 2025, with central financial assistance of Rs 14,7718.2 million disbursed.
Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik told the Rajya Sabha that since the launch of the demand driven scheme in February 2024, a total of 20,85,514 rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country. The scheme allows all residential consumers with grid connected electricity supply to apply for rooftop solar installations through a national portal.
Naik said the scheme has significantly expanded access to clean energy while supporting household level adoption of rooftop solar systems. The government estimates that installation of rooftop solar systems in one crore households could generate around 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over time. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by about 720 million tonnes during the 25 year lifetime of the systems.
The minister also highlighted the broader impact of the scheme on India’s clean energy transition, noting its role in reducing reliance on conventional power sources and lowering household electricity costs.
In a separate statement, Naik said the government is strengthening global partnerships to advance renewable energy, energy storage and grid integration. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and its institutions have entered into collaborations with foreign governments, research bodies and international organisations.
He added that major steps are being taken to develop domestic energy storage capacity, including support for research and manufacturing of storage technologies, as India scales up renewable energy deployment nationwide.
