Embracing a hands-on role as Chief Scientist to dive into AI and R&D, Sridhar Vembu departs from the role of Zoho’s CEO. Fellow co-founder Shailesh Kumar Davey is set to lead the company now onwards.
Sridhar Vembu, co-founder and CEO of tech company Zoho Corporation, has announced his decision to step down. Moving forward, he will assume the position of Chief Scientist, focusing on research and development (R&D) initiatives. Shailesh Kumar Davey, another co-founder of the company, will take over as the new group CEO.
In addition, Tony Thomas will lead Zoho’s US operations, Rajesh Ganesan will oversee the ManageEngine division, and Mani Vembu will head up Zoho.com.
Sridhar Vembu shared this transition in a post on social media, explaining that his decision was driven by the increasing complexities and opportunities presented by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). He expressed that his full-time attention would now be dedicated to R&D efforts while pursuing his personal mission to support rural development.
He further acknowledged that the company’s future hinges on its ability to tackle R&D challenges, particularly in AI. Vembu also expressed excitement about returning to technical work.
In November 2024, Vembu shared his thoughts on the rapidly evolving AI landscape, noting the significant opportunity it presents and the challenges companies face in adapting. He mentioned that navigating AI successfully would be a critical factor in Zoho’s future success.
He has been heavily involved in initiatives to promote AI, having co-chaired a national committee that established three AI centres of excellence focused on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities.
Zoho, which has never relied on venture capital or private equity, prides itself on its independence, which it believes has allowed the company to prioritise long-term goals over short-term profits. This approach has contributed to its growth to over 15,000 employees and more than 100 million users worldwide.
Founded in 1996 as AdventNet by Vembu and his co-founders, the company later rebranded as Zoho Corporation in 2009.
According to a report by Hindu businessline, Zoho, today is a leading global technology company, offering over 55 software applications across various business domains. With its headquarters in Chennai, the company remains privately held and profitable.
