With solar and wind surging, India added 34.4GW in the nine months of 2025, marking record growth and powering its renewable energy transition faster than ever.

India has achieved a record in renewable energy (RE) capacity additions, installing 34.4GW of new solar and wind power from January to September 2025, a 71.5% increase YoY. According to a recent report by the JMK Research & Analytics, solar installations rose 68.9%, while wind surged 88.8%, surpassing total capacity added in 2024.
Cumulative RE capacity in India reached ~247.3GW by September 2025, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Solar remains the largest contributor, accounting for 52%, followed by wind (21).
In the solar segment, India added 22.5GW of utility-scale solar, a 70.3% rise over the same period in 2024, with ~11.1GW commissioned in 3Q25 alone. Rooftop solar installations contributed 5.8 GW, up 81.6% YoY, with almost 46% installed in Q3. Off-grid and distributed solar grew by 1166MW, marking a 12.7% increase compared to 2024.

Financial support is also boosting rooftop solar adoption. Public Sector Banks approved over 579,000 loan applications, worth ₹109.07 billion, by September 2025.
Meanwhile, the wind sector saw 4.96GW of new capacity, an 88.8% rise from 2.63GW in the first nine months of 2024.
State-wise, five states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, accounted for ~83.8% of total solar and wind additions. Gujarat led with 8.5GW, followed by Rajasthan (~8GW) and Maharashtra (7GW).

The report stated that the strong performance highlights India’s rapid transition towards renewable energy and reinforces its commitment to achieving climate and energy targets.
The combination of government support, financial incentives, and increasing utility-scale and rooftop deployments is driving “unprecedented” growth in solar and wind sectors across the country.
