AI adoption is booming—and India is at the forefront. AI tools recorded 101.12 billion visits in 2024, and the country, closely following the US, captured a 9.53% share.

The global artificial intelligence (AI) industry recorded substantial growth in 2024, with total visits across AI tools reaching 101.12 billion, a 36.31% year-over-year (YoY) increase, according to newly released data by aitools.xyz.

The unique cumulative visits rose to 28.66 billion, offering a clearer picture of AI user engagement worldwide. India ranked as the second-largest contributor to global AI traffic after the United States (17.26%), ahead of Brazil (4.66%), accounting 9.53% share.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT remained the dominant platform, attracting 40 billion visits—an increase of 15.1 billion from 2023—and accounting for 39.56% of the entire AI market traffic.

This figure was approximately 23 times larger than the traffic recorded by Google’s Gemini, despite Gemini posting triple-digit YoY growth. Other widely used platforms included Canva, Google Translate, and JanitorAI, which featured prominently among the most visited tools globally. Tools like Character AI, Midjourney, and Chegg reported notable declines in their market shares.

Furthermore, text generation tools led the category mix, making up 53.26% of total AI traffic, driven by growing use cases in education, professional communication, marketing, and translation services. Traffic to AI platforms peaked in the fourth quarter of 2024, indicating sustained and accelerating interest as 2025 approached.

Several key factors underpin India’s contribution to the adoption of the global AI industry. As of early 2024, the country boasts over 751 million internet users, with internet penetration reaching 52.4% of the population, according to Datareportal.

The country also leads globally in mobile data consumption, averaging 21.2 GB per subscriber per month, aided by some of the world’s most affordable data rates, as reported by The Economic Times.

Although digital literacy remains an area for improvement—only 12% of Indians above 15 years are computer literate, according to a CESS study —there has been measurable progress.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) notes that the percentage of Indian schools with computer access rose from 38.5% in 2019–20 to 57.2% in 2023–24, while internet-enabled schools increased from 22.3% to 53.9% in the same period.

In terms of enterprise adoption, BCG research data shows that 30% of Indian companies are maximising AI’s potential, surpassing the global average of 26%. This enterprise enthusiasm, combined with India’s large demographic base and dynamic startup ecosystem, suggests continued growth in AI usage across sectors such as healthcare, education, and business.

As AI tools continue to transition from niche technologies to everyday utilities, India’s rising share in this trend highlights both opportunities and challenges. Going forward, priorities such as localised innovation, ethical AI deployment, and digital upskilling will be critical.
