Passenger EV Sales In India Jump 57% YoY In October 2025

Festive October pushed India’s EV sales sharply higher, led by strong gains in electric cars and commercial vehicles, even as electric two-wheelers recorded a clear market slowdown.

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market delivered a mixed but largely positive performance in October 2025, with substantial gains in passenger vehicles and commercial fleets despite a slowdown in the two-wheeler segment, according to retail data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Electric passenger vehicle registrations grew 57 per cent year-on-year, rising to 18,055 units from 11,464 units in October 2024. Tata Motors maintained its leadership with 7,239 units, followed by MG Motor India with 4549 units, up 63 per cent year-on-year. Mahindra & Mahindra recorded the fastest growth among major OEMs, jumping from 955 units last year to 3,911 units. Kia and BYD contributed 656 and 570 units, respectively. EVs accounted for 2.34 per cent of all passenger vehicles sold in October, up from 1.52 per cent in September.

“After an almost quiet September for the first 21 days due to the GST 2.0 transition, October witnessed a swift rebound, almost like a hurdle race where pent-up demand passed the baton to festive sentiment and tax-cut excitement, propelling sales to historic levels,” noted FADA President Mr C S Vigneshwar.

Meanwhile, the three-wheeler segment remained India’s strongest EV category, with sales rising 5 per cent year-on-year to 70,604 units. Electric models held a 54.51 per cent market share, underscoring the sector’s continued dominance driven by low operating costs and strong demand for passenger and goods e-rickshaws.

In contrast, the electric two-wheeler market showed signs of strain. Sales edged up 3 per cent year-on-year to 1,43,887 units, but EV penetration fell sharply to 4.56 per cent from 8.09 per cent in September, as petrol models captured the bulk of festive demand.

Bajaj Auto led with 31,426 units, followed by TVS (29,515 units) and Ather (28,101 units). Ola Electric retailed 16,036 units, while Hero MotoCorp and Greaves Electric Mobility reported 15,952 and 7,629 units, respectively.

Electric commercial vehicles saw a strong momentum, registering 1,767 units, more than double last year’s figures. EVs captured 1.64 per cent of the CV market, supported by fleet adoption in urban logistics.

“Rural India became the actual growth engine, with favourable monsoons, higher farm incomes, and government infrastructure push driving purchasing power. Rural PV sales grew over three times faster than urban, while rural 2W growth nearly doubled urban rates, marking a structural shift in the demand map of India’s auto sector. October 2025, thus, stands as a defining chapter,” said Vigneshwar.
