As India envisages becoming a global leader in the manufacturing sector, the soon-to-be-announced manufacturing policy is likely to give this sector a boost. If India has to achieve exponential growth, it would have to push for strong growth in the manufacturing sector. Recognising this, the government is aiming to increase this sector’s share of GDP from about 15-16 per cent to 20-25 per cent by 2025, and creating over 100 million jobs.
In order to tap the growing potential available in the country, various companies catering to different sectors such as consumer durables and industrial electronics, telecom equipment and solar power generation, are on their way to expanding or setting up new facilities, and even forming joint ventures. These new projects will facilitate and boost test and measurement, SMT and EMS companies to extend their services and product range.

General Electric Products manufactured: |
US based General Electric will set up a multi-facility infrastructure manufacturing unit in India, employing at least 3000 people. Initially, the company will invest Rs 2.5 billion (Rs 250 crore), and the total investment will be US$ 200 million. The facility will focus on equipment for the energy sector, besides aviation and the health sector. Within the next quarter, the company will announce the facility and the construction work will start in the second quarter (by September). Although the company has shortlisted locations, it has not disclosed them. |

Toshiba Corporation Products manufactured: |
Toshiba Corporation will set up a manufacturing facility in India by the end of this year. Its Gurgaon based R&D centre will also become operational soon. Toshiba currently imports all its products, mainly from Indonesia and Japan. But now it will begin local manufacturing of its products, starting with televisions, by the end of this year. |

BlackBerry smartphones maker Research in Motion (RIM) will set up a manufacturing facility in India. Going by industry norms, setting up such a plant may involve an investment of anywhere between US$ 150-250 million to begin with. The company is exploring Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi as potential locations for the plant. |
