Over 1600 Intel Jobs Eliminated In US

CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirms job cuts as Intel reduces layers and shifts focus toward engineering and AI growth areas.

The job reductions, set to take effect on July 11, will impact hundreds of employees working at or reporting to Intel in California, Oregon, Texas, and Arizona, as indicated by recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings.

According to Manufacturing Dive, Intel is poised to become a leaner, faster, and more efficient company by removing organisational complexity and empowering its engineers. This strategic shift will enhance their ability to meet customer needs and strengthen overall execution.

In California, 855 positions have been eliminated at sites in Santa Clara and Folsom. Oregon has seen 529 roles cut across four campuses, mainly in Hillsboro. In Arizona, 172 employees have been laid off in Chandler, while Texas reports 110 layoffs in Austin.

In a letter to employees on April 24, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan stated that Intel was perceived as being too slow, overly complex, and resistant to change, and that the company needed to address this. He mentioned that Intel intended to prioritise engineering while minimising management layers that had contributed to unnecessary complexity.

Tan also confirmed that these changes will lead to job cuts. “There is no way around the fact that these critical changes will reduce the size of our workforce,” he wrote. The layoffs would begin in the second quarter and continue over the following months.

He added that “Intel will work on improving its AI strategy and aims to build stronger relationships with foundry customers as part of its long-term plans.”

The company has also commenced the distribution of dismissal letters, signalling a new wave of layoffs at its Kiryat Gat campus. Previously shielded from such measures due to government grants, the factory is now confronting cuts that will affect hundreds of employees. This decision aligns with Intel’s broader strategy of workforce reductions, according to a report from the Israel-based news source Ynet.

Intel is expected to provide further updates on its restructuring progress during its next investor call, scheduled for July 24.
