India’s green energy push gets a turbo boost as Adani Green adds a record 5 GW capacity in a single year
Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) added over 5 gigawatts (5,051 MW) of renewable energy capacity in FY2025–26, taking its total operational portfolio to 19.3 GW. The expansion marks the largest annual greenfield renewable capacity addition globally by any company outside China.
The newly added capacity includes 3,409 MW of solar, 686 MW of wind and 956 MW of wind-solar hybrid projects. These installations are expected to offset nearly 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Overall, AGEL’s operational portfolio is projected to offset about 36 million tonnes of emissions every year.
Most of the new capacity comes from the company’s mega renewable energy park at Khavda in Gujarat. Spread across 538 sq km—about five times the size of Paris—the project is progressing rapidly. Out of the planned 30 GW capacity by 2029, AGEL has already installed 9.4 GW at the site.
Executive Director Sagar Adani said the milestone strengthens India’s clean energy transition while supporting the company’s target of achieving 50 GW renewable capacity by 2030.
AGEL also commissioned an initial 1,376 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Khavda, one of the world’s largest single-location deployments. The system was completed within eight months to support grid stability and renewable integration.
The project uses bifacial solar modules, solar trackers, advanced 5.2 MW wind turbines and waterless robotic cleaning systems to improve efficiency and minimise water usage.
On the ESG front, AGEL ranked first in Energy Intelligence’s Global Top 100 Green Utilities list for 2025 and retained its position as India’s top sustainability performer in the power sector, according to NSE Sustainability Ratings and Analytics.
