As reported by BusinessLine recently, one of the three iPhone manufacturers in India, Wistron is planning to shut its operations in the country. It is noteworthy that its largest portion of Indian business, the iPhone manufacturing facilities in Karnataka, will soon be taken over by Tata Electronics. Hence, the company is expected to approach the National Company Law Tribunal and the Registrar of Companies to dissolve its India operations within the next year.
It is further learnt from the report that Wistron’s services business for the repair and maintenance of Apple products will be the only operation that will continue in India. While noting this Taiwanese electronics company’s plans for the Internet of Things, various media reports also pointed to its expected production expansion in the EV space.
Notably, Wistron incorporated its first India subsidiary in 2008 as a sales and maintenance service centre named ‘ICT Service Management Solutions (India) Private Limited.’ Once Tata Electronics finishes taking over the facility, the Taiwanese company is likely to start the winding down process.
Being one of three Taiwanese iPhone manufacturers in India (the other two being Foxconn and Pegatron Corp), Wistron currently manufactures iPhone 14 and iPhone 12 models at its 44-acre-huge Bangalore facility. With eight assembly lines, this facility employs around 12,000 people.
