The Indian Coast Guard is set to strengthen its coastal surveillance capabilities with new Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) featuring advanced onboard technologies, including AI-based predictive maintenance systems and multipurpose drones.
The vessels are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, where the keel laying of FPV-4 and plate cutting of FPV-7 under the 14-vessel project recently took place in Mumbai.
A key highlight is the integration of AI-driven predictive maintenance, which can monitor equipment health in real time and reduce unexpected failures. This area is seeing increased adoption in defence electronics systems.
The FPVs will also deploy multipurpose drones for surveillance and maritime operations, signalling increased use of unmanned systems in coastal security.
With around 340-tonne displacement and water-jet propulsion, the vessels are designed for high-speed coastal patrol, law enforcement, and search-and-rescue missions.
The project also aligns with India’s indigenous manufacturing push, with key components sourced locally.
