The collaboration will enable hyperscalers to build larger and more efficient AI clusters using optical connectivity.
Ayar Labs, a startup focused on silicon photonics and optical connectivity, has joined NVIDIA’s NVLink Fusion ecosystem as demand for larger and more powerful AI systems continues to grow.
The collaboration will make Ayar Labs’ co-packaged optics (CPO) technology compatible with NVIDIA’s optical networking and SerDes technologies. This will allow cloud providers and system developers to build AI infrastructure that combines NVIDIA’s computing platform with high-speed optical interconnects.
As AI models become larger and more complex, moving data efficiently between processors has become a major challenge. Bandwidth requirements are rising rapidly, while power consumption and latency are increasingly limiting system performance.
Traditional copper-based connections are struggling to keep pace with these demands, particularly in large AI clusters that span multiple racks. This has prompted the industry to explore optical technologies as a more scalable alternative.
Ayar Labs’ co-packaged optics solution is designed to address these challenges by bringing optical connectivity closer to computing components. The technology delivers high bandwidth and low latency while reducing power consumption, helping AI systems scale more efficiently.
According to Ayar Labs CEO Mark Wade, AI infrastructure is being redesigned from the ground up, creating a need for new technologies that can support growing bandwidth requirements. He said the partnership positions co-packaged optics as a key component of future AI factories built around NVIDIA’s ecosystem.
NVIDIA said the addition of Ayar Labs expands the capabilities of the NVLink Fusion platform. The partnership will provide customers with more flexibility to build heterogeneous AI systems that combine GPUs with custom processors and accelerators.
The companies said the collaboration will help customers integrate custom silicon into NVIDIA’s rack-scale AI architecture while preserving investments in NVLink-based systems. Combined with NVIDIA’s networking technologies, Ayar Labs’ optical solutions are expected to improve bandwidth density, lower latency and enhance power efficiency.
The announcement follows Ayar Labs’ recent $500 million Series E funding round, which included participation from NVIDIA and highlighted growing investor interest in optical technologies for AI infrastructure.
