For a major SATCOM upgrade for the Indian Navy, BSNL and Viasat join forces deploy multi-band satellite systems to boost secure, resilient connectivity across naval operations.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Viasat have entered into a partnership to support the next phase of the Indian Navy’s satellite communications modernisation programme, strengthening secure connectivity across naval platforms. The upgrade is scheduled to begin later in January 2026.
The programme follows an agreement between BSNL and the Indian defence forces. Under the arrangement, Viasat’s high-capacity Ka-band satellite systems will be deployed alongside its existing L-band infrastructure.
The combination is intended to deliver more resilient, secure and higher-performance communications for mission-critical naval operations.
According to the companies, the upgrade will help the Indian Navy move towards a multi-band, multi-constellation satellite communications strategy. The approach is designed to improve coverage, increase data throughput and ensure reliable connectivity across diverse operational environments.
BSNL’s Gateway Earth Station will work with Viasat’s global satellite network to support these objectives.
Furthermore, Viasat’s international government team will support the programme through its communications services business. The company has worked with government agencies across several sectors. Its satellite technologies have previously been used for disaster response networks, tsunami early warning systems and maritime vessel tracking.
Viasat also provides in-flight connectivity for private and government aircraft operating in India.
Gautam Sharma, Managing Director, Viasat India, said: “With the equipment having arrived in India and installation activities set to begin this month, we are proud to support the Indian Navy in modernising its satellite communication capabilities.
“This upgrade reflects BSNL’s ongoing commitment to enabling India’s strategic communication needs with resilient and secure infrastructure,” noted Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL.
