Overtaking rivals and reshaping Britain’s EV race, BYD leads 2026 sales with strong BEV volumes, growing hybrid lineup, and rising demand driven by high fuel costs.
Chinese carmaker BYD has emerged as the UK’s top-selling electric vehicle brand in 2026, surpassing established rivals after recording 12,754 battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations between January and April 2026, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
The Shenzhen-headquartered company secured a market share of more than 7% in the UK’s BEV segment over the four-month period, overtaking competitors including Tesla, Kia, BMW and Volkswagen. It also led sales among private buyers, despite its models not qualifying for the UK government’s Electric Car Grant.
Including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), BYD’s combined New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales reached 26,396 units year to date, translating into a 9.5% share of the broader UK car market.
The company’s PHEV portfolio in the UK includes models such as the Seal U, Seal 6 and Sealion 5, with additional vehicles, including the Atto 2, expected to be introduced in the coming months.
The performance comes amid continued expansion of the UK’s electric vehicle market, which grew by 22% year-on-year during the same period. Industry observers attribute the trend partly to sustained high fuel prices, which have influenced consumer preferences towards lower running-cost alternatives.
Commenting on the results, BYD UK country manager Bono Ge said the company’s growth reflects increasing adoption of electric mobility and a shift in buyer priorities. He added that the firm is seeking to expand its presence beyond vehicle sales by introducing technologies such as vehicle-to-grid systems to improve energy efficiency.
BYD is also expanding its energy storage activities, deploying both residential and utility-scale systems alongside its automotive operations. The company further plans to roll out its Flash Charging technology, which it claims can significantly reduce charging times for electric vehicles (EVs).
