Amidst growing government scruitny for consumers, CCPA issues notice to Apple over iPhone performance issues post-iOS 18 update, as the tech giant expands its presence in India’s market.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice to Apple Inc over alleged performance problems with iPhones following the release of the iOS 18+ update. According to a report by the Economic Times, this move comes after the government received multiple complaints regarding the issue via the National Consumer Helpline.
Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed that, following an examination of these grievances, the department decided to take action. The notice, sent through the CCPA, seeks a response from Apple regarding the reported performance issues.
The iOS 18 update, launched in September, introduced several new features to iPhones. However, users have reported concerns over performance degradation following the update, which prompted complaints to the helpline.
However, Apple has yet to respond to the notice.
This development is part of growing regulatory attention on Apple as it expands its presence in India’s premium smartphone market. The company is aiming to manufacture 32% of the global iPhone production volume and 26% of its value in India by 2026-27, coinciding with the end of the five-year production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile devices.
India’s increased focus on consumer protection in the technology sector underscores the importance of ensuring companies address user complaints swiftly. According to Business Standard, Apple is expected to respond to the CCPA’s notice, potentially offering an explanation and proposing solutions to the performance issues.
In addition to regulatory scrutiny, Apple continues strengthening its market presence in India. The company recently launched the Apple Store app, designed to provide a more personalised shopping experience for users in the country.
The app launch is part of a broader strategy to expand in smaller towns and cities, alongside the opening of flagship stores in Mumbai and New Delhi in 2023. Apple has also announced plans to open new stores in Bengaluru, Pune, and Delhi NCR.
