India’s clean-energy workforce gets a boost as new university-linked training programmes by POWERCON Group emerge to equip thousands with industry-ready skills for the fast-expanding renewable power sector.
The Centre of Renewable Energy (CORE) Academy of The POWERCON Group has launched seven specialised training programmes at Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU). The initiative aims to train 20,000 students by 2026 to support the growing demand for skilled professionals in the clean energy sector.
The organisation highlighted that this is in response to India’s renewable energy sector is set to generate more than 1.8 million jobs as the country targets 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030.
The newly introduced courses cover key areas, including wind energy, solar photovoltaic systems, energy storage, pumped hydro storage, and electrical safety. Offered as Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma programmes, they are designed to broaden access to industry-focused training through YCMOU’s open university model.
According to CORE Academy, the curriculum integrates theoretical instruction with hands-on industry exposure. The programmes are aligned with the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, ensuring recognised standards and structured learning paths. Course durations range from three months to one year to accommodate students, working professionals and individuals seeking skill certification.
POWERCON Group developed the content in-house, drawing on operational experience and international training practices. The Academy said the courses aim to prepare candidates for immediate employment in various segments of the renewable energy value chain.
Commenting on the launch, POWERCON Group CEO Praveen Kakulte said the initiative seeks to address a gap between industry requirements and existing training options, noting the importance of practice-driven curriculum development.
CORE Academy has previously trained more than 6000 learners and has facilitated placements across 25 renewable energy companies. Its tie-up with YCMOU is expected to expand access to renewable energy education and support India’s transition to a larger, skilled green workforce.
