Via its Saral Sanchar portal, DoT launches a survey to explore fresh spectrum demand and frequency bands for direct CNPN spectrum allocation. Private 5G networks may get a boost.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced a new module on the Saral Sanchar portal to conduct a demand survey for the direct allocation of spectrum to captive non-public networks (CNPNs). This move aims to assess industry interest and determine suitable frequency bands for private 4G and 5G networks.
Under the CNPN guidelines issued in June 2022, enterprises can establish private networks either through spectrum shared with telecom service providers or via direct assignment by the DoT.
These private networks are intended to offer secure, high-speed, and low-latency communication tailored to business needs.
Initially, the DoT had proposed specific frequency bands for CNPN spectrum, but those bands lacked adequate device support.
However, recent studies indicate that the device ecosystem for CNPNs is now robust in international mobile telecommunications (IMT) bands, driven by advancements in 5G and the increasing adoption of industrial use cases.
With growing interest from system integrators and businesses, the new portal module will gather inputs on preferred frequency bands. This information will help the government identify viable options for direct spectrum assignment.
Eligible enterprises—those with a net worth exceeding ₹1 billion—and system integrators interested in deploying CNPN networks are encouraged to participate. Submissions can be made on the Saral Sanchar portal from July 1, 2025, to July 31, 2025.
An official memorandum detailing the survey was released on Monday and is available on the DoT website.
