The streets of villages located around Greater Hyderabad and other towns in Telangana will become more environment-friendly. The state government has selected about 100 villages where conventional bulbs and tube lights would be replaced with LED bulbs soon.
In all, there are 8,640-gram panchayats in Telangana which put together ran up about Rs 500 crore bill towards power consumption in the 2016-17 financial year. Now, the state government wants to bring down this power consumption charges on streetlights by 50 per cent by installing LED lamps in all gram panchayats in a phased manner, reported TOI.
“The Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL), a government of India undertaking, will execute the LED streetlighting project. It will be a seven-year contract with EESL, which will also maintain the streetlights and gram panchayats need not invest a single rupee on the project.
EESL will pay a penalty of Rs 5 per day to the gram panchayat if it fails to replace a non-working LED streetlight with a working one within 72-hours after receiving the complaint.
