Looking to scale up chip design in India, Ericsson is hiring 150 engineers in Bengaluru as part of its growing focus on telecom hardware development.
Swedish tech giant Ericsson is expanding its chip design operations in India, with plans to hire over 150 engineers at its Bengaluru research facility. According to a Moneycontrol report, the move is part of the company’s effort to strengthen its work on application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), which are used in telecom equipment.
The company said the expansion would help make use of India’s engineering talent in areas related to semiconductor design. It also sees the move as a step towards contributing to the broader development of India’s semiconductor sector.
Ericsson currently spends about $5 billion a year globally on research and development. Its Indian R&D centres—in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Gurugram—work on various technologies including transport networks, cloud systems, artificial intelligence, and software platforms. The new hiring will add semiconductor design to this list of focus areas.
According to Ericsson, the expanded team in Bengaluru will support its internal chip platform, which is used in mobile network infrastructure, including base stations and signal processing units.
The company believes that investing in in-house chip design can help it update products faster and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
This latest move follows the company’s launch of a 6G research initiative in Chennai in 2024, indicating India’s growing role in its long-term R&D plans.
