A milestone for Bengal’s semiconductor dreams, GlobalFoundries is planning to expand its fabless space in Kolkata. New players like Santech are eyeing to grow in Bengal, says CM.
GlobalFoundries, a US-based semiconductor manufacturer, is strengthening its fabless presence in Bengal. The company has acquired around 1208.9 square metres (13,000 square feet) at the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) incubation hub in Salt Lake Sector V, inaugurated in February 2025.
It has now requested an additional 19,000 square feet within the same premises to support its fabless design and testing centre.
This move is part of a broader collaboration between GlobalFoundries and the West Bengal government aimed at creating a semiconductor ecosystem in the state. Following a meeting between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kathy Giles-Diaz, the US Consul General in Kolkata, reports have confirmed that efforts are underway to engage industry partners, academic institutions, and startups. A joint internship programme is also being planned to offer students from Bengal practical exposure to semiconductor technologies.
“Our government is also working closely with GlobalFoundries, startups, academia, and industry stakeholders to develop a comprehensive power electronics ecosystem in Bengal,” noted CM Banerjee on her official Facebook handle.
Moreover, she disclosed that Santech Global Inc., a New Jersey-based firm specialising in semiconductor and nanoelectronics, has shown interest in launching a project in Kolkata. Discussions with state authorities are ongoing to provide the necessary support and infrastructure.
Parallely, the state government is formulating a Global Capability Centre (GCC) policy to attract investment from global technology firms.
Consultations with stakeholders are currently in progress, and the policy is expected to focus on facilitating infrastructure, incentives, and ease of doing business in the tech sector.
