Unveiling ‘America‑India Connect’, Google announces subsea cable routes and AI partnerships, expanding its $15‑billion India investment.
Google has announced plans to build new subsea cable routes linking India, the United States (US) and other regions, as part of its ‘America‑India Connect’ initiative. The project will establish an international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam, three new paths connecting India to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia, and four fibre-optic routes to strengthen connectivity between the US, India, and the Southern Hemisphere.
The announcement builds on Google’s earlier commitment of $15 billion to develop an AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh, its largest investment in India to date. The company has partnered with Adani Group and Airtel to deliver the infrastructure, which includes subsea connectivity.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, speaking in New Delhi at the India AI Impact Summit, said the initiative reflects India’s growing role in global AI adoption. Pichai was joined by Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind.
Google DeepMind also announced partnerships with Indian government institutions to provide access to its frontier AI models. These include collaborations with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to advance scientific research using models such as AlphaGenome, AI Co‑scientist and Earth AI.
In addition, DeepMind will work with NITI Aayog’s Atal Tinkering Labs to integrate robotics and coding into school curricula, embed Gemini into teaching workflows, and develop a safeguarded AI assistant for students.
The company further unveiled the $30 million Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science, inviting researchers, nonprofits and social enterprises in India and globally to apply AI for scientific breakthroughs. Selected participants will receive mentorship, engineering support and infrastructure through a Google.org Accelerator.
