The Government of Gujarat had committed to allocating over 60 acres of land to Tata Electronics
The Centre has officially notified a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Tata Electronics in Dholera Special Investment Region, marking a significant step in India’s semiconductor ambitions. The notification, issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, covers an area of 66.166 hectares within Dholera’s industrial zone under Town Planning Scheme 2A.
The semiconductor facility is part of the Centre’s broader India Semiconductor Mission and represents the country’s first chip fabrication unit, which received approval in February 2024. The plant is expected to commence operations by 2027.
Originally planned on 100 acres, the Government of Gujarat had committed to allocating over 60 acres of land to Tata Electronics for the project’s expansion in Dholera.
The newly notified SEZ will focus exclusively on electronic hardware, software, and IT-enabled services, positioning it as a crucial hub in India’s emerging semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.
The approval follows the issuance of a letter of approval in March 2026, after the proposal met the requirements of the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005. An approval committee has also been constituted to oversee the SEZ’s functioning, comprising representatives from the commerce ministry, tax authorities, customs, and the state government.
Dholera has gained prominence in recent years as the site of India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant, underscoring the country’s push to build a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem.
