Empowering youth for future jobs and a climate-conscious economy, the Directorate General of Training, under the central government, rolls out a training programme in EVs.
The Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has partnered with Shell India to launch a national training initiative in electric vehicles (EVs) and ‘green’ skills.
The programme, implemented by Edunet Foundation for students and faculty, began last week across selected Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
The first phase includes a 240-hour advanced EV technician course at four NSTIs, a 90-hour EV skills course at 12 ITIs, and a 50-hour foundation module at additional ITIs.
The curriculum, developed by DGT, Shell India, and Edunet, covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, safety, and digital tools. Over 250 trainers will undergo upskilling under the ‘Training of Trainers’ programme.
According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, successful candidates will receive joint certification and structured job placement support.
Specialised EV labs are being set up in select institutes to offer hands-on, industry-aligned training. This practical experience aims to enhance students’ employment prospects in the green sector.
The initiative supports India’s net-zero goals and complements national schemes such as FAME. Several states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, have also launched their own EV policies to expand local job opportunities.
Minister Jayant Chaudhary stated that the programme reflects India’s commitment to sustainability and workforce readiness. “Green energy, electric mobility, and the broader climate transition are not just environmental imperatives—they represent a generational opportunity for India to lead through innovation, talent, and enterprise,” he said.
DGT’s Director General, Trishaljit Sethi, highlighted the programme’s focus on real-world, skill-based learning. He noted, “With joint certification, trainer upskilling, and placement support built into the programme, this initiative will significantly strengthen the employability of our youth in the green mobility sector.”
Shell India Chairperson Mansi Madan Tripathy emphasised Shell’s commitment to youth empowerment and low-carbon futures. “Equipping youth with green energy skills is an important step towards building a lower-carbon future,” she highlighted.
