India’s semiconductor units mark a milestone as commercial chip production begins across all 10 approved units.
India’s newly established semiconductor manufacturing units have begun producing commercial chips, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push to build a domestic electronics and manufacturing ecosystem, S Krishnan, Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the A(I)NDIA Conclave 2025 in New Delhi, Krishnan said production had commenced across all 10 approved semiconductor units. “All the 10 units that have been set up will manufacture commercial chips. Already the production of commercial chips is started,” he told reporters.
He added that the first phase of India’s Semiconductor Mission was nearing full commitment. According to Krishnan, all 10 projects were grounded, while approvals for another 2 or 3 were in the pipeline, after which the first phase of the programme would be fully committed.
Krishnan said infrastructure upgrades under the programme were also close to completion, including the modernisation of the HCL facility. Once these upgrades were finalised, the government would shift focus towards the second phase of the semiconductor mission, he added.
Beyond chip manufacturing, Krishnan said the government was intensifying efforts to build momentum around artificial intelligence adoption. He pointed to extensive stakeholder engagement ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, with hundreds of preparatory events already held across the country.
