Deepening its semiconductor ambitions, India boosts ties with Singapore as both sides align on technology partnerships, skilled workforce development and faster supply-chain pathways for upcoming chip fabs.
India and Singapore have agreed to strengthen collaboration in advanced and emerging technologies, with a particular focus on semiconductors, says Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The understanding follows a series of high-level meetings in Singapore aimed at supporting India’s push to build a competitive chip-manufacturing ecosystem.
In a social media post, Vaishnaw said the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) will work with India to assist approved semiconductor projects. He confirmed the industry body will play a role in supporting investments, technology flow and operational readiness as India prepares for large-scale manufacturing.
The minister also said that extensive discussions were held with Singapore-based semiconductor companies. The talks covered their operational experiences, current bottlenecks, and the steps needed to expedite the entry of specialised equipment and materials into India.
He stressed that smoother logistics and faster clearances are essential for the country’s fabrication facilities to become globally competitive.
Skill development was identified as a major part of the agenda. The minister met officials from Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, Enterprise Singapore, the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore Polytechnic and A*STAR. The meetings focused on training Indian technicians and engineers to meet the demands of upcoming semiconductor fabs.
Vaishnaw also held talks with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong. Both sides discussed expanding cooperation in emerging technology sectors and strengthening the overall strategic partnership.
Industry commitments also featured in the visit. Global semiconductor distributor Avnet has agreed to scale up its warehousing and electronics operations in India. Vaishnaw said Avnet’s expanded presence will help reinforce the semiconductor supply chain as India accelerates domestic manufacturing.
