Ushering in ecosystem maturity, India’s space startups are attracting experienced professionals, including ex-ISRO scientists and business experts, to expand globally.
India’s space technology startups are reportedly shifting their focus from solely recruiting fresh graduates to attracting experienced professionals who can elevate their operations. These companies are hiring seasoned experts, ranging from former ISRO scientists to specialists in business development and finance, to help navigate the complexities of commercialisation, tackle regulatory challenges, and scale globally.
According to a report by the Economic Times, as commercial opportunities and technological advancements grow, industry leaders are recognising the need to invest in leadership across various domains.
This trend extends beyond technical hires, encompassing areas like investor relations and product development to accelerate time-to-market.
In the report, Anirudh Sharma, CEO of Digantara, highlighted their strategic move to bring in leadership with vast experience, such as their VP of engineering and AVP of space systems, both with over 15 years of ISRO experience.
Additionally, the startup has recruited a chief financial officer from a business-to-consumer firm to bring new financial strategies, scalability insights, and operational efficiency to the table.
Now the question comes: is this a sign of the maturation of India’s space ecosystem? Startups are also hiring talent from prominent aerospace companies and expanding teams in international markets like Europe and the US to meet growing demand, which reflects maturity.
Firms have brought in professionals from top organisations such as Tata Advanced Systems, DRDO, ISRO, and IIT Bombay to strengthen their technical and operational capabilities.
Another startup, GalaxEye’s founder, Suyash Singh, noted that senior expertise would be key in establishing their position. Meanwhile, N Space Tech’s founder, Divya Kothamasu, emphasised the importance of experienced leaders in building investor confidence and securing government contracts.
However, despite the increased interest from senior professionals, industry experts believe India’s space sector still has a long way to go before it becomes the career choice of preference for experienced talent.
Nevertheless, the competitive salaries and dynamic work environment now offered by Indian startups make them an attractive option for many professionals returning to India.
