The plant is projected to manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily
To strengthen the semiconductor industry, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that the semiconductor manufacturing plant under development in Jagiroad, Assam, is expected to commence production within the current financial year.
“Met Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji. Discussed the progress of the semiconductor plant at Jagiroad. We aim to start production from this plant within this financial year,” shared Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on social media after a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He also emphasised the newly initiated National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) development status and shared that it is being prepared to train youth in semiconductor manufacturing technologies
For this, Rs 27,000 crore has been invested in the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) facility at Jagiroad. It is expected to emerge as one of the country’s major semiconductor manufacturing hubs.
The plant is projected to manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily using advanced packaging technologies such as flip-chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP). It is expected to cater to key sectors including automobiles, electric vehicles, telecommunications and consumer electronics.
Apart from strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem, the project is expected to generate around 15,000 direct jobs and between 11,000 and 13,000 indirect employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to Assam’s economy and the wider Northeast region.
As a high-capacity manufacturing facility, its output is expected to serve both domestic and international markets, enhancing India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
