Touring the under-construction chip fab and smart infrastructure, Japanese firms explore Dholera’s industrial potential, as India-Japan ties deepen amid rising global interest in Gujarat’s growth story.
A high-level Japanese business delegation, led by Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono, visited Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) this week, marking a step in strengthening bilateral industrial cooperation with India.
The two-day visit began with a conference in Ahmedabad and continued with a guided tour of Dholera SIR — a greenfield smart industrial city under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).
The delegation, representing major Japanese corporations, was accompanied by senior officials from Dholera Industrial City Development Ltd. (DICDL) and the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC).
According to a report by Zee Business, Dholera’s cutting-edge infrastructure impressed the delegation. A key part of the visit was the under-construction Tata Electronics semiconductor fabrication plant, a project being developed in collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC).
This semiconductor facility is one of several major investments under the Semicon India Programme, with Gujarat attracting over ₹1.54 trillion in chip-related projects. The Japanese team was also briefed on Dholera’s comprehensive social infrastructure plans, including healthcare, education, hospitality, and residential developments, intended to make the city fully liveable and investor-ready.
The highlights included the water treatment plant, canal front development, a power substation, and the Administrative and Business Centre of Dholera (ABCD) building, a home to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and Experience Centre.
With planned connectivity projects like the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway and a proposed Greenfield International Airport, Dholera is being developed as a potential manufacturing and technology centre.
According to the Commerce Ministry, the visit highlights efforts to boost India-Japan industrial ties and growing international interest in Gujarat’s development as a manufacturing hub.
