Pushing ahead on semiconductors, AI, and security cooperation, PM Modi and Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae reaffirm shared goals for regional stability at the G20 in South Africa.
In a bilateral meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japan has renewed its commitment to deepen cooperation with India in critical and emerging technologies. The discussion took place on Sunday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in South Africa.
A statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry said that Prime Minister Takaichi expressed her intention to further strengthen Japan-India relations. She said she aims to realise concrete progress based on the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade, launched during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan.
She highlighted the need for deeper collaboration across security, defence, economic partnership, and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Takaichi said Japan hopes to capitalise on the strengths of both countries to drive innovation in high-value sectors. These include semiconductors, AI, and other emerging technologies that are key to economic security. She stressed the importance of turning this cooperation into measurable outcomes.
Both leaders also agreed to work closely towards a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. They emphasised that India and Japan remain trusted partners whose cooperation is vital for regional and global stability.
The meeting began at 1:40 PM local time and lasted around 35 minutes. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Takaichi on taking office and welcomed the opportunity for a face-to-face conversation. Prime Minister Takaichi thanked him and offered condolences for the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Delhi. She also wished a speedy recovery for those injured.
Prime Minister Modi was in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 November, where he participated in G20 sessions and met several world leaders on the sidelines.
