Eyeing an integrated EV business after investing in its Maharashtra factory, JSW Group is in talks with Geely and BYD about launching electric vehicles and e-trucks in India.
JSW Group is in negotiations with Chinese automakers Geely and BYD to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) and e-trucks in India, aiming to create an integrated mobility company under its new JSW Green Mobility division.
According to a report by Business Standard, the company, led by Sajjan Jindal, is exploring partnerships that may involve licensing or technology transfer agreements to establish a fully integrated EV business.
JSW is keen to tap into India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market and has selected two platforms each for electric cars and commercial vehicles to support this push. The details of these partnerships, including the scope of collaboration, are expected to be finalised in 2025. Geely and BYD are already established players in India, with Geely owning Volvo Cars and having stakes in Lotus, while BYD is expanding its presence in India’s EV sector.
In recent years, India’s EV market has witnessed significant growth, particularly in electric two- and three-wheelers. In 2024, the market reached 1.87 million units by November, with projections suggesting it could hit 2 million by the end of the year.
JSW Green Mobility, the new division focused on EVs, will operate independently but benefit from synergies with JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture in the automotive sector.
The group is also investing ₹272 billion in a new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, aimed at producing 500,000 electric cars and 100,000 commercial vehicles annually. This facility is part of a broader initiative approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet in September 2024.
JSW Green Mobility has appointed Rajiv Mehta as its chief of business and Manoj Surana, formerly of Olectra Greentech, as head of homologation and technical.
