MG Motor India, in partnership with BatX Energies, has announced the launch of what is claimed to be India’s first off-grid solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station. This initiative employs repurposed batteries from MG’s electric vehicles, offering an eco-friendly charging solution for EVs. Developed collaboratively by BatX Energies with the assistance of the Delhi Research Implementation and Innovation, the project is currently transitioning into the industrialisation phase, as highlighted in a recent press statement.
The station is designed to operate autonomously from conventional power grids, providing charging services for vehicles ranging from two-wheelers to four-wheelers. This innovation aims to decrease the dependency on traditional charging networks and reduce carbon footprints significantly.
Gaurav Gupta, the Deputy Managing Director of MG Motor India, emphasized the project’s alignment with circular economy principles and the environmental benefits of repurposing used batteries. Vikrant Singh, the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of BatX Energies, elaborated on the technical aspects of the project, noting that the second-life battery storage system begins with a capacity of 20kWh and can be expanded up to 100kWh. Supported by a 6.6kW solar installation, the system can generate around 40kWh per day, equivalent to 40 units of electricity, demonstrating a commitment to offering versatile, scalable, and dependable green energy solutions catering to a variety of needs.
Moreover, MG Motor India has significantly contributed to building a comprehensive EV infrastructure by introducing a 6-way charging ecosystem and establishing over 15,000 charging points across the country, encompassing both public and private charging stations. This effort underscores the company’s dedication to enhancing the accessibility and convenience of EV charging, thereby encouraging the adoption of electric mobility in India.
