Looking forward to a broader goal of indigenisation of firepower and employment, the Defence Ministry awarded ₹101.47 billion in contracts for procuring advanced rockets and software.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) awarded contracts worth ₹101.47 billion to Economic Explosive Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) for the supply of advanced munitions to enhance the capabilities of the PINAKA multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).
These contracts include the procurement of Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) and High Explosive Pre-Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) rockets. In addition, MoD has also inked a deal to upgrade the SHAKTI Software with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
The Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh oversaw the signing of these agreements in New Delhi.
The ADM Type-1 for the PINAKA MLRS features a specialised warhead designed to release sub-munitions over a broad area, effectively targeting mechanised forces, vehicles, and personnel, thereby denying key regions to adversaries.
Meanwhile, the HEPF Mk-1 (E) rockets are an upgraded version of the existing HEPF rockets, offering better range and precision to strike deep into enemy territory with enhanced lethality.
According to a press release by MoD, this procurement initiative marks a significant step in the modernisation of the artillery rocket regiments, contributing to the strengthening of India’s firepower. The advanced ADM and HEPF munitions will enable more accurate and long-range strikes, significantly enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army.
Highlighting India’s vision of self-reliance, MoD also noted that beyond improving national defence, the projects are expected to stimulate both direct and indirect employment, particularly benefiting the Indian MSME sector through the manufacturing of components.
