From guarding borders to tracking livestock and safeguarding marine zones, drones may soon bridge India and Argentina as both nations explore cutting-edge tech ties.
Drone technology took centre stage as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Argentine President Javier Milei explored new frontiers of bilateral cooperation during Modi’s recent visit to Argentina.
As reported by ANI, the leaders discussed wide-ranging applications of unmanned aerial systems, signalling the beginning of a strategic technology partnership between the two nations.
According to External Affairs Secretary (East) P. Kumaran, both sides showed strong interest in using drones to address pressing challenges. Argentina emphasised the importance of drones in monitoring illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing within its exclusive economic zones, a growing concern for maritime security and sustainable resource management.
Beyond maritime surveillance, discussions extended to agricultural productivity and cattle monitoring too. Drones could play a crucial role in enhancing efficiency in livestock management and agricultural practices across Argentina’s vast rural landscapes.
The two leaders also looked at the potential use of drones for border patrol and infrastructure inspection, particularly for monitoring high-voltage power lines, an area currently reliant on expensive helicopter operations.
This focus on drones comes at the same time when India reportedly eyes a new $234 million incentive programme aimed at strengthening its domestic drone sector.
The talks also mark the first time India and Argentina have seriously engaged on emerging technology platforms.
Besides UAV tech, in a parallel initiative for wildlife, Prime Minister Modi invited Argentina to join the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), an India-led coalition aimed at protecting seven species of big cats globally.
The alliance, launched in 2023, promotes cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and joint conservation efforts. With jaguars being native to Argentina, the country was seen as a natural partner in the initiative.

The visit also carried strong diplomatic symbolism. PM Modi laid a wreath at the monument of Argentine independence leader General San Martín and received a ceremonial welcome at Casa Rosada, followed by high-level bilateral talks.
