Securing rare-earth-free ferrite motor certification, Ola Electric becomes first Indian EV maker to boost sustainability and reduce costs.
Ola Electric has become the first two-wheeler EV manufacturer in India to secure government certification for its in-house developed rare-earth-free ferrite motor. The certification, granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre in Tamil Nadu, follows mandatory motor power tests under the AIS 041 notification of the Road and Transport Ministry.
The company said the ferrite motor delivers efficiency, performance, and durability comparable to conventional rare-earth permanent magnet motors, while reducing costs and dependency on imported materials. The move is expected to mitigate supply chain risks and enhance affordability across Ola Electric’s vehicle lineup.
The ferrite motor was first showcased at Ola Electric’s annual ‘Sankalp 2025’ event in August. Tests confirmed that the motor’s net power for the 7kW and 11kW variants matches that of traditional rare-earth motors. Ola Electric plans to integrate the certified motor across its entire product range to boost performance, sustainability, and consumer accessibility.
The development comes as the company navigates a challenging stock environment. On Monday, Ola Electric’s share price fell 1.8% in intra-day trading, and the stock has declined 11.9% over the past month. Despite market volatility, the company emphasized that the certification represents a strategic step toward innovation and domestic self-reliance in EV manufacturing.
By achieving this milestone, Ola Electric aims to strengthen its technological edge in India’s competitive EV sector while reducing reliance on imported rare-earth materials, aligning with broader sustainability and “Make in India” initiatives.
