Backed by 5.35 million applications and faster approvals nationwide, the PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar mission is gaining traction, with installations reaching 23.96% of the 10 million target.
India’s flagship rooftop solar initiative, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) has reached almost one quarter of its rollout target, according to new data shared in Parliament.
As of early December 2025, 2,396,497 households had installed systems, achieving around 23.96 per cent of the goal. The details were shared in a written reply by Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in the Rajya Sabha.
The scheme aims to equip 10 million households with rooftop solar systems by the end of FY 2026-27. It operates on a demand-driven framework. Any residential consumer with a grid-connected electricity line can apply through the National Portal managed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The programme has garnered strong interest.
By 3 December 2025, the portal had received 5,354,099 applications. Of these, 1,917,698 systems had been installed, benefiting nearly 2.4 million households across the country.
The government has set a target of reaching 3.5 million households in FY 2025-26. To accelerate progress, several policy and operational measures have been introduced. The application and subsidy process has been fully digitised. Subsidies are transferred directly to consumers’ bank accounts after installation.
Financing support has also been strengthened. Nationalised banks now offer collateral-free loans at a concessional interest rate of 6 per cent, with a repayment period of ten years. Regulatory procedures have been simplified by waiving technical feasibility checks and allowing automatic load enhancement up to 10kW.
The scheme now includes RESCO and Utility-Led Aggregation models to widen participation. The net metering agreement has been integrated into the online application to reduce paperwork. Vendor registration norms have been eased to ensure adequate availability of qualified installers.
Awareness campaigns, including print, television and radio outreach, have been launched nationwide. Capacity-building programmes are also underway to train skilled personnel. Regular monitoring is being conducted with states and distribution companies.
Furthermore, a multilingual grievance helpline (15555) has been set up to support consumers.
