A Purdue–IIT Hyderabad initiative brings together research, talent development, and industry collaboration as the US and India strengthen cooperation in the semiconductor sector.
According to SPAN Magazine, Purdue University has announced plans to establish the U.S.–India Centre of Excellence in Semiconductors in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad.
The initiative connects research, workforce development, and industry engagement in support of broader national semiconductor priorities in both countries.
“The United States brings leadership in advanced semiconductor research and innovation, while India brings scale, talent, and bold ambitions in manufacturing,” said Vijay Raghunathan, vice president at Purdue University and the university ambassador to India.
For U.S. institutions, the platform helps expand research partnerships and develop skilled talent by working with India’s large and growing workforce. For India, it supports efforts to move beyond chip design and expand into semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging.
Raghunathan noted that leadership in the semiconductor industry is no longer only about making smaller transistors, but also about how effectively complete systems are designed and manufactured. This shift increases the need for coordination across design, materials, packaging, and system integration, making international collaboration more critical.
Before the Centre of Excellence, IIT Hyderabad already ran an international workforce development program under the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), an initiative by India’s Ministry of Education, in partnership with Purdue University.
