The reported partnership could strengthen Qualcomm’s push beyond smartphones into AI infrastructure and custom chips.
Qualcomm is reportedly set to supply AI-focused chips to ByteDance, in a move that could significantly strengthen Qualcomm’s presence in the fast-growing artificial intelligence infrastructure market.
According to a Bloomberg report, ByteDance plans to buy millions of Qualcomm’s application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to power its AI agent software and data center operations. The partnership marks a key milestone for Qualcomm as it looks to expand beyond its traditional smartphone processor business and gain ground in the booming AI chip sector.
The deal is also expected to help ByteDance convert an internally developed chip design into a production-ready semiconductor, giving the Chinese technology giant additional support as it scales its AI ambitions. Qualcomm has been increasing its focus on AI hardware, developing products that include CPUs, inference accelerators, and custom ASIC chips tailored for advanced computing workloads.
Investor sentiment around the report boosted Qualcomm shares, reflecting growing confidence in the company’s diversification strategy. The AI chip market has become increasingly competitive as major technology firms seek alternatives to expensive AI processors supplied by Nvidia. Companies such as Google and Meta are also investing heavily in custom chip development to reduce dependence on external suppliers.
The reported partnership arrives amid intensifying competition between the United States and China in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology. China has accelerated efforts to strengthen its domestic chip ecosystem in response to U.S. export restrictions on advanced semiconductors.
The report noted that Qualcomm’s chips are expected to remain within permitted U.S. export thresholds, allowing the company to continue working with Chinese customers without violating current trade regulations.
