Securing 400 jobs and a long-term collaboration for wind turbine electronics, Siemens Gamesa sells its power electronics business to ABB, including assets in India.
Siemens Gamesa has announced the sale of its power electronics business to ABB, which includes assets in India, for an undisclosed sum. The deal encompasses Siemens Gamesa’s power electronics operations, including the design and manufacturing of converters, inverters, and control cabinets used in the wind, solar, and storage sectors. However, the generators business of Gamesa Electric is excluded from the sale and will remain with Siemens Gamesa.
The agreement involves the transfer of approximately 400 employees and two manufacturing plants in Spain, alongside additional assets in the U.S., China, India, and Australia. As part of the transaction, the two companies have also entered a long-term collaboration agreement. Under this agreement, ABB will supply power electronics for Siemens Gamesa’s onshore and offshore wind turbines.
The deal is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals. Siemens Energy emphasized that the sale aligns with its strategy to refocus on its core business and enhance profitability. Vinod Philip, Executive Vice President for Wind Power at Siemens Energy, explained that the decision to sell was driven by the company’s aim to streamline operations and that ABB’s expertise would provide a strong foundation for the future success of Gamesa Electric.
Philip also highlighted the importance of securing the future of the nearly 400 employees involved, ensuring job security through the collaboration. Siemens Energy is a leading global energy technology firm, with Siemens Gamesa serving as its wind power subsidiary.
