Following a review of Honda’s electrification roadmap, the Sony-Honda alliance refocuses on software-led mobility experiences.
Sony Group Corporation and Honda Motor Co. have decided to significantly reduce operations at their joint venture, Sony Honda Mobility, following the recent cancellation of plans to develop the Afeela electric vehicle lineup.
In a joint announcement, the companies said employees currently working under the venture are expected to be reassigned to their respective parent organisations as activities wind down. The decision comes after a strategic review concluded that, under the existing business structure, launching products and services aligned with the venture’s original vision would be challenging in the near to medium term.
Despite scaling back operations, both companies reiterated their commitment to advancing user-centric mobility experiences, particularly through software-driven innovation. The partners indicated that future collaboration may continue in areas related to digital services and in-car user experience technologies.
The development follows an earlier announcement in March when Sony Honda Mobility confirmed it would halt development of the Afeela electric vehicles. The move came after Honda reassessed its broader electrification strategy amid evolving market conditions and investment priorities in the global EV sector.
Established in 2022, the joint venture aimed to combine Honda’s automotive engineering and manufacturing strengths with Sony’s expertise in entertainment, software, and gaming technologies. The collaboration was initially positioned as a next-generation mobility platform focused on connected vehicles, advanced driver interfaces, and immersive digital experiences.
However, shifting industry dynamics and strategic recalibration have led both companies to reassess the project’s feasibility. While the scale of the joint venture is being reduced, Sony and Honda said they remain focused on exploring opportunities that merge mobility with software innovation and next-generation user experiences.
