Saturday, November 23, 2013: Government of India seems to be doing it all to make the home-grown electronics products a popular choice in the country. After bringing in the Preferential Market Access policy for the government department and agencies, it is now planning to introduce the same in the private sectos as well. The policy that mandates sourcing of sensitive telecom, electronic equipments and technology from domestic equipment makers, for private sector is at an advanced stage, informed a top official from Department of Electronics and IT (DEITY).
According to a PTI report, DEITY Secretary J Satyanarayana said, “DEITY’s proposal on PMA for domestic manufacturers is in very advanced stages and we will soon send it for government’s approval.” The policy has already been issued for the government sector. However, the one that has to be implemented in the private sector is undergoing a process of inter-ministerial consultations. After the discussions are over, the policy would be brought before the government for its approval. The PMA policy mandates the procuring of a certain percentage of its requirements from the domestic manufacturers.
Satyanarayana also spoke about the government efforts for setting up an electronic development fund. He said, “We will be doing it soon enough. Earlier we were thinking of creating a fund of Rs 10,000 crore, but due to resource constraints it could be about Rs 20,000 million.”
