The upcoming floating solar plant at Chilua Tal is expected to support Uttar Pradesh’s push towards greener power generation
The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the installation of a 20 MW floating solar power plant at Chilua Tal in Gorakhpur, in a move aimed at strengthening the state’s renewable energy capacity.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The project marks an important step in the state’s efforts to promote clean and sustainable energy solutions.
Floating solar plants are increasingly emerging as an effective alternative to conventional land-based solar projects, especially in states where land availability is a challenge. Installed on water bodies, these systems help save land while also reducing water evaporation. In addition, the cooling effect of water can improve the efficiency of solar panels.
State Energy and Urban Development Minister A.K. Sharma said the project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy adoption across Uttar Pradesh. He added that the initiative is aligned with the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy, which seeks to develop various regions as solar hubs, meet growing electricity demand, and reduce carbon emissions.
The upcoming floating solar plant at Chilua Tal is expected to support Uttar Pradesh’s push towards greener power generation while opening up new possibilities for solar development on water bodies.
