Volvo’s Latest EM90, an Elegant Electric MPV, Offers Over 450 Miles / 738 Kilometres of Driving Range, Promising a “Comfortable Living Room Experience” on the Road.
The EM90, Volvo’s third new release in the past year following the EX90 SUV and EX30 crossover, is a sophisticated and well-equipped contender against models like the Lexus LM and Mercedes V-Class. Primarily targeting the Chinese market, where it’s currently open for pre-orders, the EM90 shares its base with Zeekr’s 009 MPV but features distinct interior and exterior designs aligning with Volvo’s aesthetic.
Volvo acknowledges its new venture into the MPV segment with the EM90, reflecting its longstanding commitment to versatility since its inception 70 years ago, citing the 1953 Duett estate as an inspiration. The EM90, whose exterior was initially revealed by China’s Ministry for Information and Technology, also unveils its interior and full technical specifications. It boasts a 116kWh battery offering a 458 miles / 751 kilometres range on China’s CLTC cycle, with a fast charging capability of 10-80% in under 30 minutes. The vehicle is powered by a 268bhp rear axle motor, achieving 0-62mph/100kph in 8.3 seconds.
While Volvo hasn’t confirmed if the EM90 will adopt the Zeekr 009’s higher-end twin-motor setup, the focus remains on luxury and smooth ride quality. This is achieved through superior sound isolation, road noise cancellation, dual-chamber air suspension, and ‘silent’ tyres.
The six-seater EM90 features luxurious middle-row lounge seats with adjustable, heated, and ventilated functions, individual control panels, and a 15.6-inch drop-down screen. Volvo highlights the EM90’s versatile voice assistant, which can transform the interior into a theatre, meeting room, or bedroom.
The front cabin resembles other new Volvo models with a minimalist design, featuring a 15.4-inch infotainment screen and few physical controls. While initially launching in China, the EM90’s global release depends on worldwide MPV demand assessment, despite the UK market showing promise for high-end MPVs, evidenced by the Lexus LM’s success. Volvo remains non-committal about bringing the EM90 to the UK, where its lineup has recently transitioned to SUV-only.
