While delaying its electric car launch amid market challenges in India, Xiaomi plans a complete 5G transition by 2025, competing with Vivo, Oppo, and Samsung.
Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi aims to fully transition to a 5G smartphone product lineup by 2025, as it competes with other major players like Vivo, Oppo, and Samsung in the Indian market.
According to a Times of India report, currently, more than 90% of Xiaomi’s portfolio is 5G-capable, intending to reach 100% soon. This shift aligns with the growing trend in 5G technology, even as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to develop.
Despite this ambitious move, Xiaomi has stated that it has urgent plans to introduce its electric smart car, the ‘SU7,’ to India. While the company displayed the vehicle in Bangalore, it emphasised that the electric car market is challenging.
Xiaomi plans to first focus on China before considering global expansion, including India. The company will conduct further research before making decisions regarding the Indian market.
Focusing on its smartphone business in India, Xiaomi India’s Chief Operating Officer, Sudhin Mathur, explained that although the smartphone market has yet to recover fully, there is a noticeable increase in the average selling price (ASP) as more consumers are upgrading to mid-premium and premium devices.
While the market volume remains steady, this shift towards higher-value products allows the industry to grow in revenue. Mathur highlighted that the emphasis is now on delivering enhanced user experiences rather than solely on volume.
Anuj Sharma, Xiaomi India’s Chief Marketing Officer, added that the market has been relatively stagnant over the past few years, but signs of growth are emerging.
Consumers are now taking longer to replace their devices, a shift from the previous trend of frequent upgrades. Sharma also noted that while AI is currently a buzzword, its practical utility is still developing, and it will likely take two to three years to fully catch on in India.
