Monday, October 27, 2014:Telangana state government is growing serious about solar power to complement existing electricity supply as there is no temporary solution to overcome power crisis in the state. The government has called for bids in order to generate 500MW solar power across nine districts in Telangana.
Some farmers in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have already installed solar pumping systems but still there is lack of solar energy contribution. Bids have been invited from the Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of AP (Nedcap) to purchase 2,000 solar power pumpsets of 3 HP and 5 HP, each for Telangana and AP. But Hudhud cyclone led to extension in the last date of tenders on Wednesday.
As reported by TOI, an expert in solar energy equipment K Dhananjaya said that in last 8 years power deficit has got increased to 15 per cent in the then united Andhra Pradesh. Now the only ‘ray of hope’ remains solar energy. Some Andhra Pradesh had already taken initiatives like in Anantapur district alone, more than 10,000 solar home lighting systems were installed, followed by the likes of Guntur, Adilabad and Nizamabad. In several districts solar power is being used by weavers too and due to usage of solar energy, working hours of the weavers have also gone up by 4-6 hours and incomes have increased by 30 per cent. ‘Million Study Lights’ project was also launched to provide solar LED study lights for students in the united AP.
