Battery Life Tops Priorities For India’s Budget Smartphones

In India’s budget smartphone race, all‑day battery life beats speed, storage, and style; emerging as the ultimate deal‑maker for sub‑₹20,000 buyers.

Battery life has emerged as the single most important factor for India’s next wave of budget smartphone buyers, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. The survey shows that for consumers in the sub‑₹20,000 segment, lasting power outweighs all other features.

The study surveyed over 1000 users across Tier‑1 cities and beyond. All respondents were primary decision‑makers for their smartphone purchases, representing a broad mix of genders, income levels and professions.

In the sub‑₹20,000 category, 15% of respondents ranked battery life as their top priority. Processor performance followed closely at 13%, tied with storage capacity at 13%. Display quality and advanced connectivity (such as 5G) were next, both at 12%.

For many in this segment, a smartphone is their main gateway to the internet and digital services. Counterpoint notes that the average battery capacity for smartphones in India is now 5212 mAh (January–May 2025 data), reflecting rising demand for more prolonged use between charges.

However, in-depth interviews revealed a trade-off: larger batteries can make devices heavier and bulkier. Users increasingly want all-day performance without sacrificing portability or comfort, creating a challenge, and opportunity, for brands to optimise both endurance and design.

While processor performance remains critical overall, the study suggests that budget-conscious buyers prioritise the ability to stay connected all day without recharging. In this segment, battery life is not just a specification; it is a deciding factor that can make or break a purchase.

The analysis points to a clear takeaway: for India’s budget market, the winning formula is powerful performance paired with long battery life in a sleek, easy-to-carry package.
