India Adds Record 21.9GW Renewable Capacity In H1 2025

Surging solar, booming wind, and state-level momentum; India’s renewable energy sector races ahead with a 56% YoY surge in capacity in the first half of the year.

India’s renewable energy growth continued at an accelerated pace in the first half of 2025, with the country adding a record 21.9 GW of new solar and wind capacity. According to a report by the JMK Research & Analytics and data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), this marks a sharp year-on-year increase of over 56%.

Driven by strong policy support and rising investor confidence in the sector, solar installations surged by 51.6%, while wind capacity grew by 82% compared to the same period last year.

As of 30 June 2025, the country’s cumulative installed renewable energy capacity stood at 234GW. Solar power dominates the mix, contributing 50% of the total. Wind energy follows at 22%, with large hydro accounting for 21%. Bio power and small hydro round off the rest, at 5% and 2% respectively.

Between January and June, India added 14.3 GW of new utility-scale solar: up 49% from H1 2024. Notably, 10.6GW of this was installed in Q2 alone. Rooftop solar also gained momentum, with 3.2GW installed; a 76% jump from the same period last year. An additional 816.6MW was added through off-grid and distributed solar projects.

In the wind segment, 3.5GW of new capacity was installed during H1 2025, significantly higher than the 1.9GW added in H1 2024. Growth in this sector is expected to continue as hybrid tenders, combining wind, solar, and storage, continue to attract interest under new procurement models, such as FDRE (Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy).

At the state level, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra led the charge, contributing over half of the total new solar and wind capacity.

Analysts at JMK Research forecast the momentum to hold through the rest of 2025, with an additional 16–17GW likely to be added by year-end. If realised, this would cement 2025 as a landmark year in India’s renewable energy journey.
